The Fitter Family
Farmers weed out genetically-inferior traits to enhance their stock so why not judge human stock to select the most eugenically-fit family? Mary Watts
Set in the States in the 1920s, THE FITTER FAMILY follows Dr Florence Sherborn and Mary Watts at the height of America's love affair with eugenics.
We open with FIorence and Mary running their wildly-popular 'Better Baby' competition and their frustration that the contest is only taking into account environmental rather than heredity factors.
We see them launch their ‘Fitter Families for Future Firesides’ contest at the Kansas State Free Fair in 1920, sponsored by the American Eugenics Society’s Committee on Popular Education.
We follow the stories of competing families forced to hide illnesses, birth defects and problematic ancestry in order to win the ever-growing wildly popular, States-wide contests (the X-Factors of their day) with political and financial support from the highest levels of society.
Household names at the height of their fame, Florence and Mary’s story will end with the rise of Hitler and the international amnesia which followed.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ but in real life America.
